Zoo Negara is deeply involved in captive breeding programmes to conserve endangered species and secure their future survival.

Our Programmes

Native Species Success

  • Malayan Tiger: A primary focus via the MyBIT Programme to bolster critically low population numbers.
  • Milky Stork: Since 1987, over 200 storks have been successfully bred. A total of 100 storks were reintroduced into the wild at Kuala Selangor Nature Park and Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary, Perak.
  • Other Species: Ongoing success in breeding native wildlife such as Malayan Tapir, Sambar Deer, Malayan Sun Bear, Barking Deer, White-handed Gibbon, Lesser Mousedeer and Malayan Porcupine.

Non-Native Species Success

Demonstrating global expertise, Zoo Negara has also successfully bred species not native to Malaysia, most notably the Sumatran Orangutan, Ring-tailed Lemur, Humboldt Penguins and Agile Wallaby.
